Golden Plains Australia Day 2014 Award!

We were delighted to receive the Community Event of the Year Award from Golden Plains Shire for our recent Steiglitz Airing of the Quilts’ event.

Steiglitz was a must-see on the Golden Plains Heritage Trail which showcased Stories of our Hidden Gems on a trail through the Golden Plains region in May 2014.

~  a trip to hidden gems in heritage photographic collections and memorabilia displays across the Shire.

~  historic town walks and visit grand old buildings.

The small township of Steiglitz is undoubtedly one of Victoria’s historic gems.

It was voted Australia’s Fifth Best Ghost Town by Australian National Geographic and remains the last town in Victoria without electricity.

• Historic Display at St. Paul’s Church with local historian on hand for any questions.

• Historic Scotts Hotel Bar open for viewing -   a rare opportunity to view this private home generously opened by the owners.

• Historic Courthouse open with historic memorabilia.

Activities:

• 10.30am and 1.30pm  - Guided Heritage Walks of approximately 1 hour, leaving from Courthouse car park. Cost $5.00 for tour only, or $10 tour with afternoon or morning tea.

• Historic Sugg’s Blacksmith’s Cottage open for morning and afternoon tea.

• 2.30pm - Gold panning. Great activity for the youngsters operates at the creek. Meet at 2.30pm at the creek.

• 12 noon - Guided Steiglitz Cemetery tour  - Gold coin donation to Maude CFA.

open from 10.30am - 4.00pm offering: 

• Best Ever Choc Cake
• Devonshire Tea
• Homemade pies, muffins, biscuits and more.
• Freshly made damper and billy tea exclusively for this weekend.

• Kids - came and explored the children's activity trail.

• Photo Booth - bring your phone/camera and dress up "Just like the Olden Days".

Steiglitz Historical Society

• Photographic displays, historical booklets, plus a rare mining display and artefacts from the gold rush boom periods.

• Society members will be on hand to assist and answer any questions.  Location: St Thomas Catholic Church, Meredith Rd (past the Courthouse, over the concrete bridge heading towards Meredith).
